People seek breast enhancement for a variety of reasons; some women simply want bigger breasts, others want breasts that are more proportionate to their frame, some want to correct a size difference between breasts, and some want to restore the appearance of breasts affected by age, pregnancy, and weight loss. Regardless of your reason for considering breast implants, it is important to be aware of risks of breast augmentation surgery and the potential complications that can arise over time.

Are breast implants safe?

Although breast implants have somewhat of a checkered past, both saline and silicone breast implants are now FDA approved. Millions of women undergo breast augmentation surgery each day, and most are happy with their results. Breast implants themselves are undoubtedly safe.

Complications from breast augmentation surgery are possible regardless of which type of implant you choose and how much experience your plastic surgeon has. If your implants rupture, they will need to be surgically removed. In the case of saline implant rupture, the implants will naturally deflate and your body will absorb the saline.

Silicone implants are approved for use in women age 22 or older. Silicone was previously taken off the market for 14 years after being banned by the FDA. Studies have shown no link between silicone implants and autoimmune diseases and most doctors now feel confident recommending silicone implants to their patients.

One problem with the reintroduction of silicone implants is that the former ban makes it more difficult to find a plastic surgeon with extensive experience placing silicone implants. If you are interested in silicone implants, make sure you find the best surgeon possible to perform your procedure.

To help you locate a plastic surgeon, you can go through the American Society of Plastic Surgeons website. For breast augmentation in New Jersey, contact a top plastic surgery center serving New Jersey.
