You have decided to get breast augmentation. The first decision to make is what type of implant you would prefer. After discussing your options with your doctor you can make an informed choice. There are two choices for implant fillers. Silicone implants have a silicone shell filled with a plastic gel-like substance. Saline implants have a silicone shell filled with a salt water solution. One is not better than the other; rather they both have benefits and drawbacks. Your decision should be based on personal preference and recommendations by your doctor. Your choice should be influenced by circumstances such as desired size, body dimensions, and scarring potential.

Silicone

Silicone breast augmentation continues to be the popular choice with patients. Silicone closely mimics the natural feel of breast tissue. This type of implant is ideal when there is not a lot of soft tissue or natural girth to support the implant. This type of breast augmentation is preferred because they are more natural looking and feeling. The one major drawback to this choice is if rupture occurs it can be difficult to detect and potentially dangerous. Rupture is very rare and can be treated by your doctor.

Saline

Saline implants are made with a silicone shell filled with a saltwater solution similar to the fluid found in the body. The most obvious benefit to saline implants is insertion options. A saline implant is filled after it is inserted into the body so the incision can be very small or non-existent. Since the shell is rolled, it can be inserted into the belly button and then filled leaving no visible scar. Saline implants feel somewhat firmer but due to the versatility, the size can be adjusted for a natural looking appearance. Rupture is noticed right away due to quick deflation and does not pose a safety risk because the non-toxic filling solution is just absorbed by the body.

There are many choices when deciding on breast augmentation or plastic surgery. Make sure you discuss all options with your doctor to make the best choice for you.
