Women who have decided to undergo breast implant surgery can choose from two different types of implants, silicone implants and saline implants. Both are FDA approved. Most women end up choosing silicone due to the natural feel of the implants; however, silicone implants do have a spotty past. For a period of 14 years silicone implants were banned by the FDA after evidence emerged that the implants were leaking and causing major health problems. They were only recently approved in 2006 thanks to changes in the design and structure of the implant shell. Saline implants are considered extremely safe. The implant shells contain saline water which, if it leaks, will simply be reabsorbed into the body.

In terms of candidacy for surgery, most physicians will not operate on teenagers and recommend waiting until early twenties to undergo augmentation. This ensures that breasts are fully developed prior to surgery. Women must be 18 years old to receive saline implants and 22 years old to receive silicone implants.

One of the most important parts of the breast augmentation journey is the initial consultation with the plastic surgeon. During this consultation your surgeon will help determine if you are a candidate for surgery and you will discuss the pros and cons of breast augmentation. You must be in good overall health to undergo breast augmentation surgery. Your doctor may ask you to stop taking certain medications prior to surgery.
