Rhinoplasty, or nose job surgery, is a plastic surgery procedure that is designed to alter the appearance of the nose. Rhinoplasty can be used to decrease the size of the nose, straighten a crooked nose, reduce an overhanging or droopy nasal tip, reduce the size of the nostrils, or just alter the shape of the nose to compliment the face. In some cases rhinoplasty is used to create subtle changes, correcting a small bump or indentation, in other cases rhinoplasty can completely alter the structure and proportion of the face. The surgery is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia, completed in one to two hours.

Rhinoplasty procedures are performed as either open or closed surgeries. During open rhinoplasty surgery, the surgeon makes an incision along the tissue between the nostrils in order to reveal the underlying structure of the nose. This type of technique gives the surgeon the best view of the nose and is used when there are extensive changes being made to the shape of the nose. Closed rhinoplasty surgery involves incisions made inside the nostrils, leaving no visible scar. Closed procedures are ideal for situations where only minor correction is necessary.

Following rhinoplasty surgery, you will wake up feeling sore and somewhat bruised. There will be packing inside your nose which can make it slightly difficult to breathe. This packing will be removed within two days of your surgery. Your nose will also have a splint in order to protect it from shifting after surgery. Expect swelling for the first few weeks. The swelling will go down significantly after the first month but keep in mind the final rhinoplasty results won’t be visible for up to a year after surgery. Keep your expectations realistic; rhinoplasty can improve your appearance but it won’t necessarily change your life.
